After driving with the “Sunlander” the entire night, I finally arrived in Airlie Beach. After Brisbane, Goldcoast, North Stradbroke Island,Hervey Bay and Fraser Island, this is my next stop at the Australian East Coast. What am I gonna do in Airlie Beach?
Getting to Airlie Beach
As already mentioned in Australia East Coast Travel, I traveled from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach by train. Pretty exhausted (the Sunlander is not as comfortable as the Tilt Train) and with about half an hour delay, I arrived in Proserpine at 8 o’clock.
My luggage should actually be checked through to Airlie Beach but the Lady that checked it in already told me I should look after it. And indeed, I found it laying on the platform. So I picked it up, checked it into the connecting coach and then went for another 40minutes drive with the bus to Airlie Beach.
Finding an Accomodation
Like always, I didn’t book anything in advance. I actually wanted to look for an accomodation online during the train-ride but I hardly had any reception on this trip. As I didn’t know where to go I also didn’t know where to get off the bus :D. So I just got off the bus when it looked like the central of the town. I looked down the street and saw already many backpacker hostels, hotels and suites. Instead of walking into one after another, I checked available rooms and prices online. And of course, there were just 13 out of 47 ho(s)tels in this area available.
After comparing prices and reading reviews, I decided to walk about 15minutes to a hostel (Backpackers by the bay) with really good reviews. It’s not directly in the city center and therefore nice and quiet. I checked in at about 10.15am and was convinced immediately.
The guy at the counter was super friendly. It was a really nice atmosphere, I was told they have a barbecue every night where you can buy good dinner for excellent rates and they even have their own bar.
First Impressions of Airlie Beach
Planning my time in Airlie Beach: Sailing Trip!
After taking a shower and getting changed I felt much better :). So I started to think about my time here in Airlie Beach. The actual reason why I came here was that I wanted to go on a Sailing-Trip at the Whitsunday Islands. I looked a couple trips up on the Internet and then decided to ask the friendly guy at the counter if he could help me. Of course I wasn’t the first visitor asking for something like that, so he had a really good knowledge about the cruises.
After a while I finally booked a 3days/2nights sailing-tour on a boat called “Samurai” and even made a really good deal! The tour is gonna start on Sunday at 9am and I’ll be back in Airlie Beach on Tuesday 3pm.
TIP: If you ever want to go on a Sailing Cruise, wait until it’s just 1 or 2days before departure. Usually then you get much cheaper rates and sometimes even some extras like a free dive. In my case I additionally got 1 night free accomodation at this hostel because I booked the tour with their help. Thanks :).
