“In Response to: Starting point of my journey”
Like mentioned earlier, I wanted to start my 2months-trip through Australia by helping local people in exchange for accomodation and food.
A nice international (australian/chinese) family owning a Fuel-Station with a Mini-Market and a Workshop welcomed me to stay with them for the first 2weeks!
Getting picked-up at Darwin Airport
As outlined before I arranged with Judy (host on helpX) to get picked up by her husband Mike at Darwin Airport.
Actually this appeared to be a bit more difficult than we thought. I didn’t have a picture of Mike, so I didn’t know what he looks like. But Judy told me he’ll hold up a big paper with my name on it. To get checked by duty took quite a while. And when I finally got out of the baggage-drop-hall, nobody was holding up a paper anymore.
I started looking around to guess who Mike could be, but I didn’t have any idea. So I decided to turn on my Netbook and look up his phone-number which I received a few weeks ago. As I finally found it, I tried to find a phone from which I could call him (as I didn’t have an australian sim-card yet). When I asked somebody at the airport, another man heard that and asked me if I was waiting for somebody to pick me up to go to Batchelor. Of course I answered “yes, you’re right” – and what a surprise: This was Mike!
So finally we met and were ready to go…
A looooong ride
I noticed quite soon, I haven’t informed myself very well about this part of Australia. When Mike picked me up, we first went to buy some stuff in Darwin (including my travel-adapter for power sockets) before we started to drive to Batchelor.
It’s about a 100km distance from Darwin to Batchelor. And to be honest, I didn’t know that. I thought it’s just like a small town right next to Darwin, but I guess I didn’t zoom into the map close enough :).
As I was really tired due to the long flight, the ride seemed to take like forever. Though it was a good chance to get to know Mike who was born in Sydney and now living in Northern Territory. After a while of talking, I fell asleep and about 1hour later, we arrived at my new home for the next 2weeks.
Meeting new people
When I got out of the car, I met all the other people living at this place. There was Judy (Mikes wife), Judys mum, Kathy (daughter), Lemon (helper, Taiwan) and Anthony (helper, la Réunion).
They showed me my sleeping-place, where to put my luggage and soon dinner was ready. I wasn’t really hungry as I already ate so much on my flight, but it still tasted really good and was a great opportunity to talk to all the others.
I went to bed soon after dinner and slept until 10 o’clock next morning.
How did I sleep, what does my work look like and how do I get along with this new life?
