Hervey Bay is known as the Gateway to Fraser Island. I’ve spent one whole day before my trip to Fraser Island in Hervey Bay. So is there anything interesting about it?
Traveling in Hervey Bay
In Hervey Bay are a couple buses driving through town. But as my hostel (The Friendly) offers free Bikes to rent, most of the Backpackers staying at “The Friendly” ride with their bikes through town. The hostel also offered E-Bikes for 20$ per 5hours which is an amazing rate! I’ve never been on one before so I rent one and tried it out. And it is soooo fun! It’s much easier and more comfortable than riding a common bike. If you’re really lazy, you could even just use the throttle instead of pedaling but then the battery won’t last that long.
If you’re ever staying in Hervey Bay, make sure you try out those e-bikes from “The Friendly” for really cheap 20$ :).
As every in Australia, there are also really good cycle tracks in Hervey Bay. You can ride along the whole coast just a couple meters next to the beach.
So what is there to do in Hervey Bay?
To be honest, not much! It is the gateway to Fraser Island but nothing else. Though if you like fishing, it is supposed to be really good over there. But still for spending one day it is nice and enjoyable!
The loooong Jetty
There is a really long jetty from which you have a beautiful view. Of course a lot of fisherman on it but just pass them and enjoy! You can see all the way to Fraser Island, the Coast of Hervey Bay and the Ocean.
The Shark Show
I actually didn’t know what the shark show is, I just thought it should be interesting and went there. And to be honest, I didn’t like it at all!!! As I found out, the show is made by a shark-hunter with the aim to show all the people how dangerous sharks are and how bad they are and that they’re the end of the food chain. Dead sharks are demonstrated in every form and you always see that the show-owner is totally proud of it. You can watch some strange movies or have a look at shark dentures, plenty of newspaper articles about sharks killing people and there is even a real big frozen shark!!
If you’re interested, here are some pictures. But I would not recommend this show to you as it is totally disrespectful and nature-despising! I mean of course there are dangerous sharks. But instead of discussing the issue objectively, it’s showing it in a very unilateral perspective.
WetSide Water Park
If you’re riding along the esplanade, you’ll hit WetSide Water Park. There are a couple slides and springs which looks like a lot of fun for kids. And the entrance is free! It is only opened at the weekend but as it has free entrance, why not check it out when you’re there?
…and the rest
Basically, that’s it already! The rest is just nice beaches, a couple restaurants and some small shops along the coast. A few kilometers further there are also big stores and restaurants like Hervey Norman, Target, McDonalds, Subway etc.
